Have you been feeling stuck at work? Have you been feeling unproductive? It’s probably because you need new work goals! Below are 3 practical work goals you can set for yourself and how to personalize them to you.

Learn a New Skill

  • You have a set of skills for the role you’re currently in but, is there any skill that will make you more valuable in your role?
  • Is there a system at work that you can be more familiar with?
  • If you are in the hotel or restaurant business, all the roles support each other so could you possibly learn more about a position that is supporting yours?

Not only will this add value to your team but, it will add to your resume and make you stand out to your manager.

For example, if you are a hostess, you can ask yourself – would it add value to your role to understand how waiters take orders at your restaurant? If you are a front desk agent, you can ask yourself – would it add value to your role to understand some of the functions of your manager‘s role? Ask yourself questions about your position in relation to other positions to see where you can improve your skills.

If you are interested in changing roles in the near future, there are free or low-cost online courses to take in your free time that can help you get your foot in the door . While you’re at work, ask other teammates if you can help them to pick up some new skills and learn about other roles or departments.

Improve Team Collaboration

Do you feel like you really know your team?

Developing better team collaboration sometimes takes some extra effort. You might be used to asking for routine things from your team and vice versa, but your team can be an invaluable resource to you.

There are 3 things you can work on for better collaboration with your team.

  • Be personable
  • Go out of your way for their feedback
  • Look for ways to help

When we’re personable our team feels more comfortable trusting us. Being personable means asking them about their life, history at work, or something else to build a connection. You can use questions to figure out the strengths of your team as well.

Once you build trust, you can take strides to ask teammates for their feedback or opinion where you see fit. This will help your teammate feel included and let them know you care about what they have to contribute. From there, you can look for ways to help your team and show how valuable you are as well.

Get Organized

Do you feel like you are going through the motions with your workload? The new year is the perfect time to reset your work environment and get organized.

You can make some adjustments to your workspace by decluttering and then adding functional organizational tools that will make your life easier. Start with a clean slate and ask yourself what will help you be more effective and what’s distracting to your workflow.

If you feel like you don’t know where to start every day when you clock in to work, it might be time to look into online tools to create lists to start your workdays with intention. You can break down your work goals into bite-size pieces to add value to each and every workday. Being organized at work will help you feel and be more productive and increase work satisfaction.
