Hospitality is known for its diverse guests and employees, but there are still many opportunities for improvement and for more diverse representation and advancement in the industry. Below are some podcasts and TED Talks that talk about the importance of diversity and inclusion and how to start working towards making more diverse workplace environments. 

The Proven Principles Podcast episode, Diversity, Inclusivity and Wellbeing in Hospitality with Daniel Poulin who is the former Director of Wellbeing for Accor Hotels, and led the diversity and inclusion planning for them. In this episode, Daniel talks about how individuals can start in on their own efforts about education and actions and where he sees the office of the future becoming. 

The Lodging Leaders podcast episode, ‘Stay the Course’: Kathleen Bertrand recalls hospitality career focused on growth through diversity.  Jazz recording artist Kathleen Bertrand discusses her path of success as one of the few Black women in leadership in the tourism industry. 

Another Lodging Leaders episode, ‘This is Huge’: Choice Hotels makes history with Black-owned multi-unit deal. John Lancaster, Choice Hotels International, Regional Vice President of Emerging Markets, Fred Washington, Southern Accommodations, LLC Senior Managing Partner, Jay Patel, NashBuilt, Inc. The Lodging Leaders episode, First But Not Last features three self-starting women, Purvi Pawala, Fanwala Property Management Corp and CRC Construction Corp Co-Founder, Andrea Aguilar, Freshift Founder, and Kendra Plummer, Elise Capital Founder and Managing Partner,  who are carving their own unique paths in the hospitality industry through hotel investment, management and education. 

The Corporate Shadow podcast episode 20 Racial Bias in the Workplace discusses workplace policies being made by individuals that don’t reflect the diversity of the organization and how those can create biases without meaning to. The 21st episode, Avoiding Discrimination – Where is the Diversity & Inclusion Training where they discuss how to avoid discrimination in your organization and how to look for signs that you may need diversity and inclusion training. 

Check out Chip Conley’s TED Talk, ‘What baby boomers can learn from millennials at work – and vice versa’, he discusses pre-COVID, that we had five generations in the workplace at the same time and how each generation should be mentoring each other.
