So you’ve crafted a strong resume, avoided the common pitfalls, and are ready to apply for jobs in the hospitality industry. You need a cover letter that really impresses the hiring manager and compels him/her to grant you an interview. Here are some tips for creating a strong letter that shows you are someone special they need to meet.

DO’S AND DON’TS

Do spend time researching the company and the specific position in detail. In your customized letter, demonstrate that you are applying specifically for this job and that you know the details about what they’re looking for. Don’t use the same all-purpose cover for all the different positions you’re considering. Generic letters and those created from “templates” certainly don’t make the hiring manager feel you’re passionate about this particular job.
Do use keywords from the job posting in your cover letter. It shows you understand the job description and are addressing their needs.Don’t use decorative fonts, unusual margins or any gimmicks to try to draw attention to your letter. Make sure it matches the formatting of your resume.
Do show how your skills and abilities relate specifically to the position you’re applying for and how the company will benefit from hiring you.Don’t write a long, rambling letter. Keep it brief (half page is typical) and snappy. Hit specific highlights and ask for the opportunity to meet in person.
Do explain why you want to work for this company, resort, hotel, etc. and show your passion for the position. Be personable and enthusiastic.Don’t forget to provide your contact information and show them you’re proactive by telling them you will follow up on a specific date.

THE BASICS OF A GOOD COVER LETTER

Your cover letter should be carefully constructed to provide the information the hiring manager needs to invite you to interview. You need to convey that you are laser-focused on customer service and that you have the skills and characteristics they need to fill this position.

  • First Paragraph: Here’s where you introduce yourself and mention the position you’re applying for. Explain briefly how you found the posting and why you think you’re a good candidate for this particular job (current job, past experience, special training, knowledge of area, etc.) Keep it short… leading into the next paragraph where you’ll give more detailed information.
  • Second Paragraph: This is the main body of the letter where you’ll give details about your accomplishments (that are relevant to this job) and what makes you a good fit for this position. This is not a repeat of all the facts that are already on your resume, but an opportunity to expand on something specific to demonstrate how your skills apply. Help the hiring manager see you “hit the ground running” on the first day.
  • Third Paragraph: Here’s where you explain why you want to work for this company, what sets them apart and what you value about them. Be genuine and don’t overdo it – you don’t want to appear phony.
  • Fourth Paragraph: Conclude your letter by asking for an opportunity to meet in person to discuss the company’s needs and how you can contribute to the team. Make it clear that you will follow up on a particular date.

And remember, the tone of your letter must be customer oriented – this is the hospitality business, after all. Feel free to share an experience where customers were happy with a solution you provided to a sticky situation, or give an example of your leadership skills in your current or previous job. The employer wants to see how you would fit into their organization and this position, in particular.
