Competition is high right now for job seekers, with many people still job searching from employment changes during the pandemic, as well as people who have decided to participate in the Great Resignation

In order to be considered for the job, job seekers need to stand out from the other resumes and profile hiring managers are looking through daily. But how can you do that?

Here are our tips:

1. Apply to roles you’re qualified for

When you are researching a role to apply to, have a list of skills you have already gained throughout your career, and match that list to the skills required in the job posting. The closer you are to being the perfect fit, the likelier you will get an interview.

2. Ask for a referral or recommendation

Instead of just applying through a job post, reach out to your current network or form new connections to get a foot in the door.

Ask one of your connections to pass along your resume, or a recommendation if they feel comfortable doing so. If you don’t currently have a connection that can refer you, you can find employees of the company you want to apply for and ask them about their experience working there and for a relationship that can lead to a referral.

This may take a bit of time but can have a huge payoff. Make sure not to start off with asking for a referral or recommendation, however. Use these tips for networking.

3. Do your research

This may sound like common sense, but it can also easily fall to the bottom of the checklist when you apply to multiple roles and companies a day or week.

This will help make sure that the company aligns with your values and culture you want to work in and you will also be prepared to answer interview questions like “why do you want to work here?” or “what will make you successful in this role.”

Demonstrating that you truly researched the role and company will set you apart from job seekers who are just applying anywhere and everywhere without a rhyme or reason.

4. Customize your resume and cover letter to each job

Highlight the skills you have that match the skills listed in the job posting for each role you are applying to. This will help your resume pass through the ATS into the hands of the hiring manager or recruiter.

If you are applying for front desk roles, it is likely that all the job descriptions will highlight the same skills, however, one company may be looking for someone who has experience specifically in a luxury property, as opposed to another who may be looking for someone with specific program experience. You want to make sure to match your skills to those to be considered.
